Location

Just 10 minutes from Bangor, Groomsport is known for its picturesque harbour and its two fishermen's cottages, known as Cockle Row.  The cottages have been developed for North Down Heritage Centre and are used as a Tourist Information Centre.

The cottages are also a centre for local crafts, stocking a selection of paintings, pottery and souvenirs. Open air craft demonstrations and fairs are held during the summer months and the cottages act as a backdrop to the "Eagle Wing" Festival held in July.

Down through the years Groomsport has been associated with many famous names. Originally part of the vast estate of Bangor Abbey, following the dissolution of the Irish Monasteries in the 1540s the land came under the ownership of the O’Neills of Clandeboye.

During the reign of James 1, Bangor and its environs were granted to Sir James Hamilton, a Scottish adventurer whose grandson, Henry 2ND Earl of Clanbrasill sold Groomsport in 1674 to the clergyman Robert Maxwell for the princely sum of £900!
